fuel tank efi mod Empty fuel tank efi mod

Post  charger Thu Nov 12, 2009 11:26 am

i`m back, didn`t work on my truck at all this summer just to damn busy, anyway got my tank done this weekend and i figured i`d post it up, first of all bought a 69 mustang tank off e-bay (cheepest around) cut the fuel pump and vent bung off the crown vic tank, measured and marked a hole where the tank is completely flat at the bottom and cut a hole on top of the tank with a holesaw, didn`t have the proper size so i just cut out the hole to the proper size, was initially going to build a fuel tray like tanks ink are using to mount on my fuel pump but decided to build a sump and baffle (don`t want the pump to ever starv out) figured out my sump would stick out one inch lower than my tank and a 2 1/2 wall or baffle inside the tank, proceded and bent and welded my sump,(kinda looks like a ashtray) ,drilled 6 holes just over the 1 inch mark so fuel can go into it (front and front sides only), 1/4 inch from the top curled in the edges,on the front and front sides, centered it in the pump hole of the tank, marked and cut the bottom of the tank out,GRIND THE TANK STEEL TO REMOVE GALVANIZED COATING BEFORE WELDING) welded in the sump, inside and outside of the tank, welded in the bungs, fuel pump was sitting sideways from the bung mount, cut the mounting bracket off and added a piece of steel and welded it together to make it straight and also the proper length from the bottom of the tank to the top, so now all i have to do is line the inside of the tank and its done!! going to use kreem tank liner.

fuel tank efi mod Empty Well done...

    Hi Charger,
First off, I'm surprised to see a '69 stang tank in that good of condition. That thing looks new.

I am so glad to see posts like this as this kind of thing is what this board is all about. It just goes to show that a little ingenuity goes a long way toward saving boatloads of money that you would have spent buying high dollar after market and specialty parts.

You are probably aware of this but I would suggest you coat your weld areas with something as the protective coating of galvanizing gets burned and ground away in the process of welding to these tanks. The damn things are so thin they can rust away in 6 months where the coating is gone. There are products available from auto body and paint supply places for treating and primering galvanized surfaces so you can put a good protective paint coat or an epoxy on them.

Once again, congrats on your ingenuity...

thanks man! one thing i forgot to mention is to grind around the welded surface before welding, it removes the galvanized coating, i also use kreem tank coating liner, i`ve done lots of motorcycle and atv tanks and this stuff really works, as for the outside of the tank i`m gonna scuff it prime it with galvanize primer, seal all my welds, spray it with door rocker guard and then paint it black

I figured you would probably have that covered Man... I used that tank liner stuff on two generator type welding machines I restored which you can see by clicking on

    http://www.pvpmedia.com/rw.htm

I sold both machines and so far no complaints after two years so I guess it works OK.

    Thanks Man...

The first one was a 1958 model and the second one was a 1973 model. I guess I have a short attention span because I don't have the desire to do more of them. I actually did the second one for myself but after having it sit here for a year I only used it once. I don't know why I thought I had to have it. I bought two new Lincolns and a plasma cutter when I sold the blue one. Now I am completely covered for MIG, TIG, stick, aluminum and cast iron. I also have a smaller Lincoln MIG for body and sheet metal work. So, I'm well covered with welding equipment but I never could come up with a need for portability. So having a gasoline powered welder that had to sit outside and run was not a big plus. They cost a lot more to run too. An oil field outfit and a pipeline company bought those twy machines. It seems they bring a good price regardless of age if they are modernized and in good condition.
