Behold the work of a twisted mind... Empty Update...

Post  Darkside Dave Thu May 14, 2009 9:46 am

OK, got the Scoobygator back in the shop for what I am hoping is the final countdown. I am getting the electrical system in now. There is a lot more to this than one would think. I still have to put the brake lines on it and get the engine plumbed and wired up. There is also the radiator and electric fan to get installed.

One would think by looking at this thing that it should not take that long to finish. I'm afraid it's like approachingb the speed of light... The closer you get, the longer everything takes. I'm afraid my short attention span gets in my way sometimes. I tend to take too many project detours. However, interest in other things is causing me to get serious aboutb finishing this thing so I can move on. I plan on selling it when ut is finished. I really have no use for it as I live on a half acre. I do admit that I am finding the work more interesting now as well as I am a bit amxious to get it finished just to see how it does.

I will be putting some pictures up as soon as the electrical part is done. Check back in about a week, there should be more pics by then.

Behold the work of a twisted mind... Empty Updated report...

Post  Darkside Dave Wed Jun 03, 2009 10:43 pm

I am finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel on this thing. At least I believe that is the case and not the light of an oncoming train. Today I picked up about $85.00 worth of brakelines today at one of those "REAL" auto parts stores. They said I could brinb back the pieces I did not use. I now have the new brake lines on one side and the exhaust system on that side installed. I think I can finsh this thing up and get it sold soon. By July I hope to be started on my two '53 F-100s. I have posted more pics of the progress on http://www.pvpmedia.com/SG1.htm .

    Thanks joe,

I'm not sure if it was such a good idea but a buddy of mine gave me the rusty old Subaru and my wife wanted it out of the yard. So, I decided to build this thing. One thing is for sure, it's damn near bullet proof.

Hopefully some fool... er I mean good customer, will buy it and get it out of my life. I've been playing with it since '04. It's time to move on.

Behold the work of a twisted mind... Empty Big Milestone today...

Post  Darkside Dave Thu Jun 11, 2009 10:30 pm

    Hi Folks,

Today I finally got the old Scoobygator engine fired up after five years of pushing this thing around in various stages of the build. I had no idea what it would sound like with the exhaust system I designed. It sounds really cool. I think it sounds like two Harleys running side by side. How cool is that???

Behold the work of a twisted mind... Empty Carb problems...

Post  Darkside Dave Sun Jun 14, 2009 5:56 pm

I spent most of the day working on this Scoobygator today and I didn't really accomplish much other than actually driving it up and down the road out front for about 1000 feet or so. I don't have much good to say for the Hatchi carb. I got a kit for it, cleaned everything thouroughly and made sure it went back together right. It stiil runs like shit and the float must be sticking part of the time because every once in a while the gas will just pour out of the thing. I have an electric fuel pump that I bought from AutoZone years ago. It only puts out 6 PSI but it must be too much for this thing. The linkage also gets stuck once in a while and I haven't found whats causing that.

I have lots of brake problems too. Two of the four bleeders broke off amd the master cylinder doesn't seem to want to pull down fluid from the resevior. So, I guess I will have to totally rebuild the whole damn brake system. That will be anothe couple of hundred in parts. I did put on all new brake lines but that was because I had to when I built my own vevicle. I just thought I would at least be able to get it working good enough for a test ride. I did plan on redoing everything but I thought the MC would have been OK. WRONG !!! My Bad... I guess I'm going to have to knock up the selling price a bit to cover the extra expenses.

Days like this fill with exasperation and multipl failure sure sap my vigor. Man I wish this thing was done.

Ph, on the good side... The dump bed and ais suspension in the rear do work OK.

    Thanks Man...

Yestersday I did four seperate test runs down the road and back. we live on a rural dead end road. It is a mile round trip. I don't have any of the instruments and control stuff in it yet. the wiring is tied together with wire nuts and temporary switches dangling from the dash cavity. Last night I gave my neighbor a ride and he thought it was a blast.

I still have issues with the carb and getting the brakes right. I don't think the vacuum booster is working right. But that is the way it goes with anything you build from various parts and raw materials.

Tomorrow I will weld together a tailgate for the dump bed and weld mounting tabs on the roll cage for the lights. After that it's time for painting and while that cures I will jump on the instrument and control panel. With luck this thing will be out of the shop by mid July. I have some more pics I will try to get posted that show the guts of the beast.
