Thunder Chicken in the roost... Empty Thunder Chicken in the roost...

Post  Darkside Dave Wed Apr 07, 2010 9:17 am

    Hi Folks,

First off, I thought I had already done this but I must have done it wrong because I can't find it this morning. I must be smokin' some really good stuff...

I am on the horns of a dilemma as they say... Two days ago I was called by a guy desperate to sell a wrecked '90 T-Bird Super Coupe. I had seen his ad for it and called several days before where I left a message. Monday I was in town driving around to do some errands and my cell rang. That happens a lot so I have long since gone hands free with a Bluetooth earpiece. On draw back is that while driving I can't always understand everything the callers say. It turned out to be the guy who had the SC for sale. He was in a panic because it was being towed to an impound lot where they charge $15.00/day. He originally was wanting $700.00 for it. Now he was in a bind and wanted $450.00. So, right then and there I altered all my plans and headed for the place the car was which was about 15 miles a way. I met him there, looked over the car and made the deal.

Now I have this thing home and sitting out there in the trailer. I managed to get it started. It has been sitting for two years and the battery is no good. I jumped it and started on the third hit. It runs good and it does not blow smoke. Aside from the wrecked part it seems to be a very solid car. It does have a number of issues that while are fixable if I can find the parts, it would probably be rather expensive to restore. My original line of thought was to part the thing out because there are things like the engine, tranny and IRS that would bring big bucks. Now that I have the damn thing I am nagged by this little voice in the back of my head that says restore it. Around here at least, you hardly ever see a Super Coupe. I remember my son having an '89 Mustang GT that was fast as hell and he told me one of these things gave him a hell of a run. We had '94 and '95 Birds back in the '90s and I remember them as being great road cars even though they weren't worth a hoot on snow. I always like their looks.

So, I think you can see my dilemma... Part it out, take the money and run or keep it to restore and spend a ton of bucks on it. It's a battle between making some bucks or taking on another project that I probably won't ever get done. Help me out here guys. Let's her some thoughts on this. Right now I am thinking of at least seeing if i could collect the parts to repair and restore it because it might be profitable to sell it with all the parts if I decided not to do it myself. Here are a few pictures of it.

The radiator and intercooler are not damaged. I just need the radiator support, A/C coil, bumper, grille, front lighting and a new dash as the one in it is cracked from sunlight exposure. This thing has no rust, great maint. records and a pretty good interior plus a kick ass after market sound system.

    What do you think guys???

Since I am not a Ford fan, its easy for me to say sell it. And since you have other projects going, I would take the money from parting it out and apply it to your other builds. Just my opinion though. scratch

Shouldn't be too hard of a fix, I don't know the thunderbirds but I would think you could just get a new front for a donor and weld it on. Little bit of fresh paint, maybe even some expoxy in the dash crack, and you're good to go.

Then you have some options, if you want to keep it you could paint it yourself and have some fun. If you wanted to sell it you'd get more with it not being damaged, or as you said the parts.

No need to really rush on it, as long as it's protected it could sit till you where sure on what you wanted to do.

my 95 and the 91 i parted you could just remove the core by getting rid of some spot welds and put another on , hades with a lil' work i'd imagine you could pull that one . the biggest drawback to these cars well two , is one they dont have a full frame so you gotta put subs in to get serious and or weld up the body seems , and the weight . no bull guys mine with a 4.6 and auto , full tank of fuel and me is 3960 lbs. it's a testament to the power the sc 3.8 and the 4.6's are capable of to move some of these sleds to the times some are running .

I don't know guys... I just can't quite get the bug to fix it up. I mean I've already got two projects I have been collecting parts for for about two years and I really need to get on them. My son, Frankentruck, says I need to find a Miata for the T-Bird drive train. Sounds wild but then again it's another project. Some have also suggested that I do one of the trucks with SC engine, again, sounds cool, but not my original plan. I would be tempted to put it all in the Radio Flyer truck but I'd need a transfer case to mate to the T-Bird 5 speed OD tranny. I would go that route and sell off the 351W with tranny, TC, and the goodies I have collected for it. I doubt there is anything to mate that tranny with a Transfer case though.

I just got back from a trip to Pull-A-Part. I spent a hour disconnecting all the stuff in the way and got everything loose and out of the way to drop a T-Bird IRS with disc brakes and the damn four main bolts that hold it in would not budge. They take a 15mm socket. I have a good one but it's a 12 point and it stripped the hex bolt head. I had my six point metric impact sockets but those assholes who put those sets together don't seem to want to make a complete set of sockets. I soon learned that I was not going to win. Pull-A-Part does not allow cutting torches or grinders in the yards so there went my other option. It really pissed me off because I could get it for $65.00. That is the closest Pull-A-Part yard to me and they had the most Birds of the three yards I go to. This is up North where they love to pour on the salt and you can really tell it has been used a lot. The owners of these cars were pretty good at cleaning the top side but they must not have the car washes with the under carriage sprayers. I was really surprised to see how bad those cars were underneath. I did manage to get a clutch and brake swing pedal set from a Ranger that I need for my truck project because I need go with a standard as opposed to the automatic the Explorer donor had. Koth was with me and he got a door, mirrors and a really nice electric fan from the T-Bird I was trying to get the IRS from. He spent $90.00 and I spent $12.00. But hey, any trip to Pull-A-Part is fun.

    Later Folks....

try any of the 4x4 custom parts places , maybe wilcap for the adaptor . dont forget the bird 5 speed is a mazda unit , and the 4x4 trucks with the 300 six and a manual od tranny used the same dain basic tranny so i would assume that yer needed adaptor might just be there ........................ ask me why i know .... wouldnt be because i had a 4x4 with that tranny and i kept tearing the dain thing up boonie bashing .................p.s. yes i'm full of useless information that floats around in my neurons and creates havoc with my logic epicenter ..................... see what i mean ???????????????? cyclops

the truck in question i had dave was a 93 , had a mazda built light duty 5 speed and a light duty transfer caes with a 300 six in it . didn't keep it long as the trans and transfer case weren't up to the rigors of some of the mud holes i visited at the time . id be willing to bet at the least it would give you an idea or two , if not some parts and peices . then you could just stick that lil' sc 3.8 in yer toy and .........................
