Just stopped by my local paint supplier to check some paint chips for my truck and low and behold they told me i only have 28 weeks to get paint due to government regulations jan 1 2010 will only be able to get water base paints!! don`t know if this is throuout Canada and the States??anybody else affected by this??

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Catch the wave. Be prepared.
The federal government recently announced its Climate Change Plan for reducing green house gas emissions by 18 percent by the year 2010. As part of the plan, the federal government will bring forward a regulation to limit VOC content in automotive refinish coatings in Canada. The pending low VOC legislation means the switch to waterborne basecoat and low VOC products is imminent.

A change this significant presents challenges, just like any other transition. The first thing you should do is relax. You’re not alone. We’re here to help make the transition to waterborne as smooth as one of your paint jobs.

    Getting you ready
Converting to waterborne basecoat can be accomplished with a relatively low investment. In most cases, the cost of conversion will be offset by increased productivity and lower energy costs in the application process. A well-equipped shop will need only small upgrades to take advantage of the substantial benefits of waterborne basecoats.

The first step is to determine if your shop meets the minimum requirements to successfully spray and dry waterborne basecoat. This is where we get involved. Our technical sales representatives are expertly trained at assessing shop conditions and equipment. We will complete a comprehensive shop audit and report any upgrades we feel are required for you to successfully convert to waterborne. Remember: the sooner you complete your shop audit, the sooner you can begin planning your conversion.

    Training and support
Converting to DuPont™️ Cromax®️ Pro basecoat and other DuPont Low VOC solutions makes complying with new regulations straightforward and simple. With over nine years of global experience helping more than 20,000 shops and tens of thousands of paint professionals make the switch to waterborne basecoats, DuPont Refinish is committed to providing extensive training and support to make this transition as effortless as possible.

Working in the auto industry for some time, we starting actively shooting waterborne basecoats in 1990-91. I worked as part of the test team for my company trying to determine how we would deal with touchup repairs on our new cars. Can't say that it's a big deal, just different. The clear coats are still solvent borne. I'm sure that it will present some problems in the aftermarket for a while. Like everyone, I don't like the change, but we might as well get ready for it. I don't see a choice.

    Hey !!!

    I resemble that remark...

I have used Rustoleum a lot with Valspar hardener. If you do it right it loos pretty damn good. I have donesome red and black stuff that came out exceptionally well. Some pros even thought it was high dollar car paint.

I'm with you, they can't stop us in the home shop.

Oh no !!! Here come the paint police... Hide the spray gun.

    Later Man...

Honestly I don't know a thing about them. I have been hearing that it takes special equipment... How much and what I have no idea. Maybe somebody here will get on and tell us all we need to know.

Dave, the only things that are different would be that the spray gun needs to have stainless needle and tip. And most of the modern day guns that I have looked at have the stainless components. We used deionized water in our base paints and I guess that was just a mfg. requirement by the paint company. I would guess that distilled water would work ok. The spraying technique is the same. You just have to be sure that the water is completely flashed out before clear coating. It's not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. We had a little trouble doing color matches, but we had trouble color matching with solvent based paints. Depended on the color we were trying to match.

OK, then I assume the clear coat is still an accrylic or is it something special too?

Only the color coat is waterborne because that is the one that uses the most VOC's. PPG is a good one. You can still use your standard primer, surfacer, sealer, and clear.

Clear coat is still solvent base(nothing special). I got a feeling that Havi has also been "hands on" with these materials too.

Actually I've been exposed to the water based paints since 1999. It's what we use at work on our demolition equipment, but without clear. So I've been giving it thought for home use lately, since that is the direction we've all been headed for a while now. Reading the legislation posted here kinda sped up my interest a bit.

It's also why I have put off buying all my paint equipment.
