Well, you all already know that a guy like me just can't resist. I'm going after a donor rig for my Big Job project. After being thoroughly disappointed with the Cat V-8, and very worn dump truck chassis, I scrapped just about everything, but the body. So, in my never ending search for a good donor drive train, I think I may have found the perfect rig. I went and looked over a 1971 L-9000 today. It is equipped with a Detroit 8V71, 318 HP, 700+ lb. ft. torque diesel, backed up by a Fuller 10 speed tranny. It has an ugly air suspension on a low geared pair of rear axles. I'm not convinced about the rear, so I think I will be chopping them off, and putting my 200? Peterbilt 3.73 axle and "air leaf" suspension under it. The end result will be a 53-56 body style Big Job, setting on a diesel powered single axle tractor frame. One of the best parts, it'll have a very nice 2-stage Jake brake on it (oh yeah, that'll be LOUD).

And the plot thickens. So, I'm sitting gearing up to buy this '71 that's in pretty rough shape. I get an email from a guy in response to my Craigslist ad for a Detroit equipped rig, and the guy has a 1980ish F-800 with a 6-71T Detroit, and 9 or 10 speed transmission. The best part, he's totally flexible on asking price. I'll have photos, and a better idea of the truck tomorrow morning.
