    Turbo-Super Charging ??? Empty Turbo-Super Charging ???

Post  Darkside Dave Sun May 02, 2010 8:36 pm

OK, I've been watching too much TV...

I saw on of those Saturday Morning shows where they were putting a tail pipe mounted Turbocharger on a truck. I had previously seen this done on sports cars. It gave me an idea. I am putting a 3.8L supercharged V-6 from a T-bird Super Coupe. Years ago I recalled working on a Detroit Diesel generator the used both turbocharging and super charging. I thought why not try it with a supercharged gas engine. I'm thinking of hitting the Pull-A-Part yards and looking for a couple of little TC's, one for either bank. "Wye" the outputs together and feed it back through the intercooler to the supercharger. I wouldn't need to worry about waste gating because the supercharger set up already has regulation to avoid too much boost. CLICK HERE to check out my build thread for this project.

    Later Folks...

Found a deal on new SC's for AUDI A4 A5 A6 S6 TT T3/T4. I wonder if they are big enough. If not I could get two of them. Anybody know what displacement these engines are. They were talkin' 450 HP so they must not be too small.

Turbo-Super Charging ??? Empty Change of mind...

Post  Darkside Dave Mon May 17, 2010 10:06 am

I took a lot of heat from a local friend on this idea. He was ranting and raving about how I was going to burn up my engine and toast the exhaust valves. It has been hard for me to explain to people what I had in mind. It WAS NOT my intention to cram 20 pounds of boost into the supercharger as many seemed to think. The idea was to create an always positive pressure to the supercharger because if the air between the intake and the supercharger is at a negative pressure or a vacuum it will not be as dense and when it goes through the cooler it will not cool as effectively. The turbo idea was just a way to create a little positive pressure. The SC engine has a kind of recirculating waste gate that will only allow so much boost to the engine no matter what is forced into it. I found those cheap Chinese knock off turbos online and I thought that might be a way to go.

Since then I have re-thought this idea and I have decided that the turbo idea, although cheap and unique, is not a good idea. The reason being that it may actually be necessary to have intake vacuum for this engine at least part of the time. I noticed that the gauge in the dash is a combo vacuum/boost gauge. I also noticed that it does not show boost until I gun the engine. I am thinking that since there are so many things that run on the vacuum that it needs that vacuum at times to suck out the vacuum reservoir which probably has a check valve to maintain a reserve when in boost mode. Of course there could be an auxiliary vacuum pump on it I have not found yet.

I did manage to come up with an alternate plan though. I have several very powerful 12 VDC high RPM electric motors. I also have an aluminum blower which is much like a leaf blower in design that I can fit with one of my motors. These things would turn up gobs of CFM. I could use this in the intake circuit as an auxiliary which could be kicked in just prior to taking off from a stand still and left on during periods of extreme acceleration. Of couse that could mean I would need an additional vacuum pump to maintain brakes and other vacuum servos.

All this is just in the thinking stages now and may never come to be. Posting here is simply a way to bounce ideas off fellow Darksiders.
