Homeso, I posted this question on our other forum with no reply so maybe here. Over the weekend I recieved The rams horn manifold I bought sight un-seen, upon arrival they were pitted but only surface stuff, I started grinding and smoothing the pitting out but stopped shortly thinking its best to always get advice...So, if I smooth out the pitting on the Cast Iron manifolds, is there a potiential issue with excessive heating? Thanks for any insight...This may not be the right forum to post this...I hope its close enough!

From my own personal experience, I've never had a problem with smoothing off cast iron manifolds. I used to do it just to get rid of the casting marks. I would think you would have to remove a lot of material to create any kind of a problem.

I notice your pictures did not show. If you are having trouble let me know. Where are you uploading them from? Here you can upload directly from your computer by typing in this[+img].......[/img+]but leave out the plus signs and put the location of the picture on your computer like C:\\Documents and Settings\\DAVE\\My Documents\\My Pictures\\truck01.jpgwhere I have put the line of periods. Or, you can click on the icon that looks like a computer screen and put the location there and click OK. It will put the picture where ever yor cursor is at the time.

Sorry about tha low54. I started a reply to you and my fat fingers hit something that sent it. When I did git it fixed you already had the problem solved or else the system was just slow uploading you pictures.

so I got some lite grinding done on the exhaust manifolds I think they moothed out pretty well considering, I used a high temp ceramic paint about 3 coats...

Man those things look pretty good. Is that a heat resistant coating of some sort?

yeah dave, temp rating is over 350 degrees. at least that's what the can said...we'll see if it flakes or cracks, I used the same paint on my flathead manifold, it did fine...and those flatties get hot!

If you still have the can, let me know who makes that stuff. I can write to them and find a way to get it. I have tried some stuff that did not work out too well. I bought some stuff at a big all Ford swap meet that I haven't tried yet. It cost $8.00 a can. I want to use it on my headers but I have concerns about it not working out and then I'll have a mess to deal with.

I know this reply is late but I have had good luck with the modern welding rod made for cast iron. Sandblast the manifold to clean the surface. Even though pre-heating is not required, I would use a torch to heat the manifold and stick weld the pits. Once the weld has cooled you can then carefully grind the weld back down and save a lot of time versus trying to grind down the entire surface. Then use a sandblaster with course media and reblast the surface to blend the surface texture. I think the end result is cleaner than a manifold that has clearly seen the working end of a grinder.
