Man you need a TIG and a MIG welder. We need to get you on Extreme Garage Makeover with a sad story and they can get you some new toys.

You don't see many guys brazing anymore. I doubt many would know how these days. I do it occasionally when the need calls for it. Brazing rod and gas are just too high anymore.

It looks as though you are getting right at it though. I'm guessing wet soppy floor padding and carpet are the culprits here.

Smile I learned how too braze when i was 14 and the same person taught me how to lead,I guess the old school traits will never go away Laughing

I was just teasin' you Man,

I just don't like the heat blast of a torch as it tends to warp stuff and set things on fire. You really have to do the right stuff using the dissimilar metals as the promote electrolysis under the paint. It's avoidable but you have to know how. I know what you mean by old school, but I have learned to adapt and once you learn how it makes things easier and stronger. I use the MIG for stitching and the TIG for the final work. it did take some getting used to. I have also fallen in love with the plasma cutter. It also has the advantage of not causing fires although it can happen sometimes. If you do much custom work and don't always have premade factory panels it is really handy to have other sheet metal working equipment that I will get as soon as I make more room for it. I have a set of 50" powered pinch rolls and access to a break and sheer. I also would like a power and planishing hammer as well as a few other toys.

    Smile Hey Dave
    No harm done Laughing
I know what you mean about getting used to other ways,I use the mig for alot of other things i do use it for panel replacement. But when i do stuff like floors i prefer to braze. When i said i hated it i do for areas like floors!!
When i complete putting the floors in i will take some detailed pics i think you might be surprised on how they come out. As far as the tig i would like to try one out sometime. And you are right about catching things on fire but with experience you get to know what to watch out for cherry You were sort of right about how the floors got bad the guy that had it before us was one of those people that thought grinding out the lead around the drip rails and leaving the car outside for the winter. And then putting it inside a unheated garage for 12 years, need i say more Mad .
The car has less then 60.000 miles on it and the 283 runs like a top. We are going to update the brakes to dual master and disk brakes, power steering. May decide to a add some other goodies Laughing Any suggestions!!!!

It sounds like you are well on your way with your project. I ran into a similar issue needing a clutch and brake pedal assy. for my project but thankfully there was a bolt-in solution as the Ranger and the Explorer Sport had them and their are plenty of them in the junkyards.

I assume you have noticed your thread is now a sticky.

Very nice pontiac!! I didn't realize they were putting chevy engines in those way back then.
In support of your opinion on import steel here's an item you may find of interest. Way back in the mid '70s my Dad was a welder for Reach-all Mfg. in Duluth Mn. They had to scrap out several units because they discover the import steel they had gotten had a flaw called "banding" or "belting". The flaw was inconsistent carbon content/alloying through a sheet of plate with bands 3" - 4 " wide where the carbon level was extremely high and the steel consequently brittle, and in some cases even unweldable. When flame cutting it would come to the band and just stop cutting and blow the flame back at you. When welding it would have slag pockets galore. then the next foot or two would be fine. These bands go clear across the sheet. Fortunately all the bad units were found and replaced before any wrecks or injuries occurred.
Fast forward to the mid '90s. I bought an after market front fender for my '81 blazer. It bolted on just fine, and I never noticed until after I painted it that the gap between the fender and cowl as well as the hood was 1/4" greater than the gap on the other side. it was as though they just saved a little bit of metal by making everything just a hair smaller...But when a gm fender at the time was about $350, and the aftermarket one was $76 it was the only option I could afford at the time. A used one would have been better in both ways.

    HI
    Thanks for the comment!!
I too had bad luck with that stuff, thats why i refuse too use it.
If i cant find good used factory metal i will make it , i guess that is why it takes me longer when i do a project !!
As far as the 283 all canidian pontiacs from 65 to 70 used the chev frames and drivetrains. The only thing iam upgrading in that part is the 2sp tranny to a turbo 350 trans. I was going too go 4spd had the tranny but changed my mind.

    Progress

Post  58 ford on Mon Jul 02, 2012 4:11 pm

    Hey Everybody
Well things are starting to come together! First off the frame that i fixed up turned out to be worse then i thought.

So i replaced it and started over GRRR, I just finised cleaning that up and pressure washed the engine and tranny.
I will be painting the new frame and the engine very soon and posting the pics then. I have the new body mounts so i can put the body back down as soon as the frame is painted and the engine is back in the cradle!! My plan is to have the car in primer and running by september. If i can i will paint it and be ready to drive late spring. I cant wait to get this thing done and start rollin with it. Hey Dave maybe i can make Dayton hamfest next year LOL.
