A sad ending for noble beasts... Empty A sad ending for noble beasts...

    Hi Folks,
Today I was invited by River Rat to a sad occasion. They were scrapping out some old Ford big trucks. One was a '53 F-600 dump truck and the other was a '54 F-600 with a fifth wheel on it. They both had Y-blocks and two speed electric rear ends. I was asked to see if there was anything I wanted from them. Unfortunately they were all too far gone to salvage any reasonably usable body parts from. I started to take one of the windshields out but I noticed it had a small spiderweb crack in it so it was not worth removing. I did get a good back glass out of the one with the dump bed. The guys doing the scrapping saved the engines and trannys but they didn't want to mess with the rear ends. I hated to see those go but I don't really have a use for them. I'm sure there is somebody someplace that is thinking they would have wanted them. I had my camera with me but I decided it was too sad to take pictures of. It just didn't seem right to photograph their final demise. According to the plate sticker, the dump was last on the road in '78. That was thirty two years ago.

They also scrapped out a big old '48 that had a winch with an "A" frame and some kind of telescoping boom on it. It has a flathead v8. I noticed when they pulled the engine there was about an 8" removable plate in the bottom of the oil pan. I suspect it was for access to the oil pump without taking off the pan. I should have taken a picture of that but I didn't think to do it.

I was glad to get the back glass but it was really sad to see the old girls go. OK, so I'm a soft hearted old fool...

    Later Folks...
