Lil Bastard 91S10 with a 3.8lSC Empty Enlighten me...

Post  Darkside Dave Thu Apr 29, 2010 10:47 am

    Hey Man,
Help me out here. Either I saw something else or I saw a picture of your truck completed. Am I right or is it something I'm smokin'? If I am right, I hope you will post it.

If the above is a mistake on my part then is your build roughly at the stage as shown in what you have posted. If so, have you dealt with the hydraulic clutch issue yet? If so, did you just plug in your line from the S-10 or did you have to make modifications to the hydraulic line and connector? Just curious... If you have looked at my build thread here you may have noticed that I recently decided to go with a Super Coupe engine and M5R2 tranny. It looks as though I will be able to use the hydraulic clutch set up I harvested from a Ranger. All indications at this time point to a simple matter of just plugging in the connector.

if you get a chance, look around and comment on some of the other folks work and that way you will get notifications by e-mail on when they post in their threads. I'm also sure you would have lots of interesting info to post in the system specific categories and also do and introduction of yourself in our category for that purpose. Hopefully you will be able to contribute a lot to the board.

Lil Bastard 91S10 with a 3.8lSC Empty Clutch

Post  Ninja Thu Apr 29, 2010 12:56 pm

Well the truck is almost done, just dealing with a few small bugs. The hose i used for the intercooler tubes were getting sucked shut and i had a few air leaks in my intercooler tubes ect. But the fedex guy just got here with my parts to finsh the intercooler tubes and my elect fan control. As for the clutch i had to buy the clutch bracket since the truck used to be an auto and they tossed in the s10 master with it. So i took the s10 master and cut the cyl out of it. Then i used the Tbird master which is sloted, kinda the put in and turn to lock it in. I then cut out the proper slots in the s10 bracket so it would fit like a factory ford. (I tried to keep this truck as OEM parts friendly as humanly possible so i dont have to spend arm and a leg to get something replaced.) I also had to make a custom rod for it again mated the ford rod with the s10 one. Also the truck u prob saw was my 1982 S10 with a 420horse small block. Im in the process of detuning that after this one is finished and putting fuel inj on it. As simple as a carb outta be. For some reason they have never liked me, i have never ever been able to tune one in 100% and have given up lol.

Lil Bastard 91S10 with a 3.8lSC Empty Sooooooo Close!

Post  Ninja Tue May 04, 2010 8:10 pm

So today was a good day! Ive been having some idle issues with my lil project. Being a 90 comp i cant look at the data stream with our modius, i even tried a 91 year but it wouldnt take it on the comp. Sigh. Have also been fighting with the dash gauges. Well today, i killed 3 birds with one stone. I got the idle fixed, all the dash gauges work, and even got a seat in it. Looks like i was backfeeding some of the ford sensors via the cluster in the dash. I guess when i took the column out to install the clutch pedal i musta pulled out the dash ground. Once i got the dash up and running (meaning after checking all the wiring, senders, ect. Well call it 4 hours.) One ground got the dash up and running along with the engine. Idle smoothed right out. So hopefully in the next couple days ill have a nice lil burnout vid. Its got missmatched 14's that are just dieing to go up in smoke. Im thinking about getting a tune put on it so i can get rid of some of the systems that im not gonna use aka egr, can purge, anti theft, abs, ect, ect. And after talking to a few people, with the set up i have i could pick up 40-50 horse just on the tune. But we will see, vid coming.

So what computer interface and program are you using??? I need to find something I can use to hook up my laptop to my SC engine. I may need a custom tune myself if such a thing is available. I am thinking of using two turbochargers under the rear to feed the supercharger. We got an intercooler so I might as well two fan it and force feed it. Did you figure out those vacuum lines yet. I looked in the book and it shows a diagram but not for the SC.

Well thats the thing that sucks, i cant see the data stream on this one using our snap on modius. Dayton preformance has the equipment to hack into and rewrite the prom. But after today and getting the eng all smoothed out i may hold off for a bit, im sure a tune would be money well spent but im still working out a few kinks ect ect. Unless u have an old ford scan tool i think ur pretty much boned unless u have a aftermarket one that can hax the hex keys of the old comps. But if i do have a tune done ill be down there buying lunch so i can look over there shoulder and see how its done and report back. But the systems the vendors for reprogs they try to sell us are around 400-900 and u have to spend between 30-75 per burn depending on the manufacture ect (honda, toyota,gm,ford, dodge, ect) And to us, ive only seen 4 comp go bad, and 2 were done in by the cust, (Big amp cables over the comp not a good idea esp if they rub through) Usually its just a power or ground issue. Ive seen alot of prego main power and grounds, living in ohio just a fact of life, rust happens. But then again if u dont like the weather wait 5 mins.

Things that make you go Hmmm.... There is a guy on here that goes by Ford Boy Pete who seems to know a whole lot about the old pre '95 systems. I'll bet if there is something out there available to link up a laptop he will know about it. That price is rather ridiculous considering I can buy adapters and s detailed analysis real time software for my 6.0L diesel for around $300.00 that will literally blow you away. I'm going to PM Pete and ask him about this.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if there are not already chips available out there that do what you want.

So after talking to a tuning shop on my lil project ive decided that instead of spending 600+$ for A tune, that i would rather spend 500 some on a system i can A look at data and b change said data not to mention delete all the bs that comes on a oem system aka egr evap anti-theft. And since it rund i can piggyback (or so ive read) the system so it can get a really nice baseline on my crappy ford eec4. So megasquirt here i come!

So, let me get this straight... Somebody is actually asking 5 c-notes for a custom tune??? That's rich... Considering there are very few of these things around they must go a long time between meals. Are there no ready made chips floating around out there? I realize they would most likely not have the EGR stuff removed but it ought to be better than what you got. Have you been over to the T-bird and Cougar forums? I bet somebody knows some stuff that might help.

Well to be honest for what it entails that really isnt that much. chip was $299 with custom burn and $125 hour for the dyno time. To be honest i think 125 for a roller dyno isnt that bad, but... everytime i change something back to dyno ect ect and i still wont be able to look at the data, that seems unaceptable to me. So i think im gonna run it on the stock settings for now and build a megasquirt harness so i can retain my stock one, and then just switch them out when im ready no real down time.

I was just looking through your pictures and I noticed the position of the oil filter, which I believe is stock as I just looked at the manual I have for the '90 SC. I am wondering if that is going to be a problem with sitting the engine in the '99 Explorer 4WD chassis. There is a lot of stuff up under the front with the 4WD and power steering. If it's a problem I am either going to have to find a kit to remote the oil filter or else fire up the lathe and mill to make something. On the 4.0L V-6 the filter is about mid way back on the right side of the engine and believe me, it's no fun to change.

yea there is alot going on up front for sure, the ? is how high can u mount the engine? to be honest it really dosent sit all that low. Myself, i was working with a body that the engine sits pretty far down in. You may have alot more height to work with. If its still an issue the oil filter is on a water cooler, u could make a remote system and mount as u please. Kinda like they do on the 4x4 s10s. Just use better hoses then they do lol.

The SC engine is still in the car and there is so much crap around it I can't hardly see anything on it. I will just have to wait until I I get it out and get it mounted on the rolling chassis. Since I am using the Explorer chassis and the floor and fire wall mounted in the stock position there actually may not be a lot of room to raise the engine. I am considering moving the body mounts back 2" to center the front wheels on the fender wells and that could actually translate into a bit more wiggle room for a height increase. It's just another one of those things you gotta play with to get it right and I won't know until I try it.

    Hey Ninja,

In you post you wrote, "my v8s10 shouldve been a stick." Shouldn't that have been a v6 or maybe just call it a supercharged S-10? Until now I had thought you had a stick in that thing. It just so happens that I am going to switch my 5 speed with one for the truck with a transfer case. I know that mine is in great shape as it the shift linkage also. I was going to try to sell it for $200.00. Since you are in Ohio that might be a good deal for you. I also have a limited slip rear end from a Ranger you could probably use.

Lil Bastard 91S10 with a 3.8lSC Empty Its been awile

Post  Ninja Sun Sep 12, 2010 9:52 pm

So after having a beautiful baby girl i had to get rid of some of the 2 seaters. And no lil bastard was not one of them lol. I got some seats out of a 2002 s10 extreme that fit like a glove. I sold my 1990 s10 2.5L and im in the process of selling my v8s10 hint hint. So lil bastard has been my daily driver for about a month now. So far so good, i did however fix the extremely annoying exhaust. The org exhaust was true duels with flowmasters. Ug what a horrific sounding exhaust, i was almost to embarrassed to drive it. Sounded like a civic on steroids. The rasp, drone, and the poping was way to much for me. So i ordered a dynomax ultra X, its a 2 in 2 out x pipe with packing like a cherry bomb. I ran it in front of the flows like a resonator and let me tell u what a difference. Dramatically lowered the tone no rasp or poping. It once again sounds like a truck. Im so happy! Other than that i really havent done much to her. Ive been working on getting my 2.5 l blazer up and running and then sold. Saving up for a jeep grand Cherokee 1993-1995ish. Ahh the 4 doors ug.
