So I've been looking for a traditional pre-war hot rod for quite awhile and have been distracted by the Fairlane, Tbird, and KB2's (prices hard to deny). I wanted something to go hand in hand with my '48 F1, since I'm not going all out street rod with the truck. So I found this plymouth in a field up the road from me. I kinda know the owner of the field, but unsure if he'll sell yet. Anyway, anyone else know what it is?

I'll give a hint....it isn't pre-war. It ain't exactly what I wanted, but it doesn't stray far from pre-war either.

Re: Plymouth I found
Lol, it is. I did a google image search for 1940 Plymouth, then 1941, 1942, then 1943 when the match was made to the grille of this one. The google image came from an ad stating they only made 1300 of these. I got all giggly thinking I found a good one. But I then realized they halted production in 1942 for the war effort. So I'm thinking the ad was wrong. I went back to searching and found out it was a 1950. I had 1950 Plymouth business coupe as one of my "rod" hopefuls, though this is a sedan model, it's still not in bad shape for MN. Not a big priority, but I think I'll go back up there and leave a note on the car stating I'm interested. Still on a hot rod quest, lol. (NSRA cut-off date is pre-1949, IIRC)

Hey Dave,
What did you use this for?
Was it driven on the street?

Re: Plymouth I found
Yep, it was street legal. We had 86 acres out in the boonies that we were terying to get resdy to move a mobile home on and get out of the rental we were in. We used it going back and forth and the big gas tank also transported gasoline for use out in the country. It was a lot of fun to drive and it always gotr lots of attention. Total investment was $35.00 for two old cars and probably another $50.00 in parts and material at most. It was really pretty good at getting around the hills and woods too. We used a small trailer with it to get firewood.

Re: Plymouth I found
not really. If anything it would be a custom of sorts. An extreme would be the newer 1954 Plymouth "Sniper" But the '46-50 Plymouth's weren't popular for customizing, which is why I have considered one. My preference was a '50 Business Coupe, add a 2-3" chop, roof rolled forward, 331cid hemi, lowered, so on so forth. Hot rods? The early 40's Plymouths, sure.bgarrett wrote:havi wrote:So I've been looking for a traditional pre-war hot rod for quite awhile

Here's my wish list (it changes now and then)
'29-ish Ford sedan delivery
'35 IHC panel truck
'38 Studebaker coupe
'36 Pontiac coupe
'53 Mercury or Lincoln capri
'50 Plymouth business coupe
'51 Pontiac business coupe

Re: Plymouth I found
That first one I would attempt a chop and mild section on. The second one, I would just redo the driveline to lower the stance and leave the patina. The last car I drug out of there was my Mercury Meteor and that cost $350 when the scrap prices were high. I'll be back to ask him, but money is still short these days. And everything else I have is too far gone to just get running and drive. The price I pay to start cheap, lol.
