I'm putting 1959 Caddilac taillights in the back fenders of my 1960 Ford pickup.
This is what it looked like when I stopped for lunch.

    Thanks guys.
When I was a kid I really liked the step by step photos in hotrod magazines
so heres step by step photos of my tailight installation.
This is the way I do it and if you know a better way, I sure would like to learn it!

    I take a flat piece of metal 11 1/2" by 11 1/2" because I want to make a 3 1/2" diameter tube.

I run it thru the English Wheel to make it curl up, then use hose clamps to hold it while I weld it.

I have seen guys obsessing about where to get metal to work on their cars. This metal was the skin of a washing machine...or maybe a dryer. Good stuff.
I keep car and truck hoods and cut them up as needed, too.

    Heres the tube

The little chinese guy put the center piece in at an angle.

Cut a hole in the fender.
    Good luck with that.
I used the shape I used in my 39 fender.
    It was WRONG.
I had to add some metal back.

Correct shaped hole with the tube inserted and welded.
I prefer to work the metal without using any bondo but in this case a little will be needed at the small scraps used to fill the false cut .
The tube was welded in with an arc welder using 1/8" 6011 rods.
I dont recommend it, its just what I have done for 38 years.

Then cut a gasket out of an old inner tube and the taillite is ready to go into the fender.
The next picture of this fender will be when its painted and on the truck

    Thanks guys!
Hey bloody knuckles my grandpa had a truck like yours
(except it was a Studebaker and it wuz a 4 dr car and.....haha)
I bet you guys have heard that before, along with -- is your bone stock original model A a 'kit car'?? I was speechless

Grandpa had a turquoise 55 Ford pickup for many years.
I showed up one day and it was gone.
    Sold it, He said.
Got $75 for it, He said.
    You shudda heard me cussin

I had no idea those tail lights were gonna turn out like that.
If I ever do it again I will position the lights closer to the rear of the fender .
That said, I kinda like the deep inset and long teardrop shape.
I've never seen another like it!

you have hit one of my pet peeves.
For more than 45 years I have wondered about hotrodders weird obsession with putting tail lights as low as possible.
    Thats a dumb idea.
When manufacturers came out with third brake lights, they seemed like a good smart idea.
When that (Pontiac??) van came out with the tail lights in the C pillar, it sure made sense to me.
I want to incorporate those small chrome bullet red lites into the upper rolled edge of the pickup bed as brake lites.

I plan to hold off on posting more pictures of this truck until it is road ready.
I think I must have spent about 8 hours on the license plate holder and license light...and its nothing out of the ordinary.
