DARKSIDER In the world of automotive hobbyists a Darksider is one who modifies and or customizes any and all sorts of vehicles. The Darksiders are in a class of their own simply because they endeavor to be different and do things that others would not attempt for a number of reasons mostly being related to a lack of ability and fear of non conformity.

This is a forum for people who think outside the box in everything they do. It doesn’t matter if you are modifying or building from scratch. It doesn’t matter what brand or brands of vehicles or components you are using. It doesn’t matter if you are working on a mini car or a bus.

Well, I'm here too. Mine aint so dark that it's burnt, but it's kind of a malicious dark. It's kind of like a M&M. Colorful candy shell on the outside, (the bone stock outward appearance), and rich dark chocolate underneath (open her up, and you find the far from stock powertrain). The next one's gonna be even darker.....48 F-1 that's going to be low, and fast. Have ideas for another big truck as well. Next Big Job is going to have all the trimmings on the outside.....Sleeper, Turbo wing, etc., etc.

I'm one of those that will walk either side of the line. It all depends on the truck, and the idea. My 53, it's well done. The 48, it's going to be charred. On the other side, my mom's car before she died, was our 64 Falcon Futura 2 dr sport hard top (not sprint, and yeah, it's a long sub model name, but that is what it is signed to by Ford). It is going to be restored from the ground up, 100% perfectly concours, right down to the correct hoses and clamps. My dad's 55 F-350 express pickup is also going to be frame off 100% perfect concours. Both will absolutely 100% factory perfect, able to be shown in even the strictest of museums. Dad has commissioned me to under take those projects after our court battle is over in January. I have been eye balling acouple more trucks of this vintage, and want to maybe split the herd with stockers, resto-mods, and burnt to a crisp darksiders.

    Hi Joe,
A lot of people misunderstand me... I am in NO WAY opposed to purist restoration jobs. But let's face it, 90% of the old stuff that is left out there is not good enough for a restoration job. If I ever got a vehicle that was good enough I would definitely restore it without question. I really take this whole Darkside thing as a joke in many ways. Yes, I am serious about doing really radical mods, the farther out and more complex the better. I have often teased the purists only because I know it gets to them. However, there is absolute truth in what I say to them. If it wasn't for guys like me taking off parts that we don't need and odffering them back into the market, they would be restricted to buying after market repops as opposed to original parts. A true restoration is not a collection of repop parts even if it looks right. I don't care what they say, the stuff is not the same.

I'll give you an example. I bought a badly rusted '53 F-100. I knew from the git-go that it was not worth even a mod job. The best things about it were a new windshield, a good title, a fender or two, and a T-98 synchro 4sp. tranny. It also had a ver rare round radio from Ford that I have seen go for more than what I paid for the truck. Point is, I can take parts I have collected with anything I can use out of this one, and build up a Darksider truck out of what I have and use this title and have something unique and useful that I am not afraid to drive and use. If I did stumble acros a good candidate for restoration I would probably do it up and sell it because I have no real use for it or the proper place to keep it. All this ads up to point out why I embrace the Darkside. Of course there is always that other reason... because I can. I have always been fascinated with blending the best of the old with the new and modern.

Yes, I know what a Falcon Futura is. Hey, I'm 64, it was one of the cars of my youth. I can also understand the need for you to do it up right since it was in your family. Unfortunately, there is nothing left of the cars of my family except the memories and a few pictures. I go to car shows and reminisce at the old restos as well as the rods and customs. I appreciate it all. If I had one car to choose from my past, it would be the '53 Mercury Monterey 2DHT I drove when I was in high school. I will always regret getting rid of that car, however, if I had it or had kept it, it would probably have a lot of mods by now.

OK, one other thing... When I read your message about uploading pics I didn't realize thatn you were trying to put them in the open gallery. I can't tell you much about that. I would suggest putting them in a build thread that I can make a sticky of for you. I have had no problem putting multiple pics in the threads. If you like this idea of starting a bould threda and you want to start one let me know when you do it. I can make it a sticky so it won't get lost in the shuffle. Of course if any one else does it in your category their sticky will come after yours. Even as stickys they appear in the order the were first posted. You can add to them and there will also be responses included unless you want them made so relpys cammot be made.

As for the galleries... The reason you could only post one picture at a time is because the pic you posted was the cover pic for the gallery title. You can open that gallery and post pics under it. The pic you posted is just for a representation of what is in that gallery. Kind of like the cover of a magazine... Understand???

Yeah, I agree with you, pretty much 100%. It all depends on the rig. If it's so complete and solid and original, why mess it up. If it's got a lot of flaws, rust, hacked frame, etc., etc. Mod the piss out of that thing. I think I'm fortunate compared to many people. Our family holds to something that is very important to us all. We have two of the vehicles still that we had over 20 years ago. The 55 F-350, and the 64 Futura. They are both so complete and solid, and have so much of our life with them, that it would be an insult to make them anything but perfect. you're right on also, when you talk about the supply of parts. If it aint original , it aint the same, and that's all there is to it. If it weren't for the customizers, there just wouldn't be any parts for the retorers. I think I got the picture thing figured out, at least enough to get by until I have more time to dink with it. For what ever reason, I think you and I must be o the same page....ya know what I mean.
