    Garret parts... Empty Garret parts...

    Hi Folks...
I just got the TC off my 6.0 diesel. It's a Garret VGT turbocharger. I could be missing something but it seems like I have been all over the web looking for a parts breakdown on this thing and I can't find anything. I would like to replace the Exhaust side turbine as it has a very slight bit of damage. I probably could still use it but these things are so damned hard to get off and take apart that I would rather replace it now. Garret has a site where parts are available but there is no mention of this particular model. I will probably have to e-mail or call them. These things run from $1,500.00 to $2,500.00 so it just makes sense to fix them. I removed it to do a recommended reconditioning which is really just a cleaning and inspection process. Hopefully I can find what I need and replace the turbine wheel.

If any of you guys have been through this and know where to find parts let me know.

    Later Folks...

Garret parts... Empty 6.0 Turbocharger Refurb...

Post  Darkside Dave Thu Nov 12, 2009 11:57 am

    Hi Folks,
    Update:
I got tired of waiting for an answer and I decided that since the TC was over boosting to start with that the small chip in one of the turbine blades was not a real problem. If it was it would never have been able to produce an over boost. I did the TC refurb clean up job on it but I didn't buy the kit. It turned out that it had two "O" rings, and a gasket for the oil pressure tube. My gasket is made of plastic and was in perfect condition. I just cleaned it off and used it again. besides, if it ever did leak it is easy to get to and change. They also give you a new compression band that keeps the split exhaust turbine housing together and mine was in perfect shape. The throw in a couple of abrasive pads and a mandrel for a drill motor to use to clean out the crud. I cleaned my parts in the glass bead blasting cabinet which is way better. They wanted $70.00 for that kit and I didn't need to spend that much for two "O" rings for the oil drain tube. I can get "O" rings a lot cheaper than that. As a matter of fact I keep a big selection of them here in the shop.

So, I essentially did the procedure my own way. While I was at it I did the EGR cleaning procedure. I did buy the $7.00 kit for that. It turns out I could have skipped that part as my EGR was pretty clean, unlike the ones in the pictures of the 6.0 forums. I got it all back together and took it out for a test run. It runs better but I am still having a problem blowing off the blue coupling hose that comes rightb off the TC going to the intercooler. It blows on the tube side. I even tried the hairspray idea to help it hold. The clamp is really tight so that's not it. I may have to get a new coupling but the thing looks to be in good condition. I didn't think to take pics of the TC when I had it apart but it looked just like all the ones you see in the pictures online. I did take some shots of the tear down of the R&R. The thing is a real pain in the ass to get out and put pack in.

    Here are the pictures:

The above two pictures show where the TC was mounted. The silver goop on the exhaust couplings is never-seize compound. I don't think you can ever use too much of that stuff. I wish the last guy had used it.

Here is the TC on the bench before I took it apart.

Above are two shots of the TC back in place. What a pain in the ass this job was...

I guess the best part about this so far is that I know how to get the damn thing out and back in. Hopefully I can resolve the problem with the coupling hose. I think I will put in a couple of fittings to measure boost pressure before and after the intercooler. I am curious to see if it is restricting the flow.

    Thanks Man...

I just thought it might help someone else later on. And they can always write or call me if they get stuck. The job is difficult but not impossible.
